FINE ART DEPARTMENT

All of the following fine art classes fulfill the UC and CSU visual and performing art requirements.

Art 1 (1 semester) Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Students study various concepts of perspective drawing, freehand drawing, shading, color theory, watering, painting, human form, and cartooning. Students take written and drawing notes for their art projects. Creative expression is achieved by the students when they create their own art projects.

Art 2 (1 semester) Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of previous level.

This course of study will emphasize the various concepts the students learned in Art 1. Students further their artistic knowledge of perspective drawing, freehand drawing, shading, and acrylic painting. They learn new media and genres such as air-brush, fashion and design, and architecture. Students create their own art projects.

Art 3 (1 semesters)

Prerequisite: Art 2 and teacher approval.

This are class is designed for students who wish to create their own art. Students must be self motivated and able to function with minimal instruction. Students choose any genre and media they want to work in.

Art 4 (2 semesters) Grade 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of previous levels and teacher approval.

This is an independent study class. Students choose their own areas of study with the goal of completing an AP Art Portfolio.

Art 4AP (2 semesters) Grades 11,12

Prerequisite: Completion of Art 1 & 2

This is an Advanced Placement art course. Grades for this course are determined by daily work habits and weekly art projects. This course requires the students to submit an art portfolio to the College Board to be scored on a scale of 1-5. A score or 3,4, or 5 will earn college credit.

Ceramics/Sculpture 1 (1 semester) Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Students are introduced to sculpture and gain hands-on experience creating a wide variety of sculpture in the media of paper maché, plaster and ceramics, with a major emphasis on ceramics.

Ceramics/Sculpture 2 (1 semester) Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Ceramics/Sculpture

This course is the continued exploration of the 3-dimensional form. Students gain hands-on experience creating a wide variety of sculpture projects including, but not limited to, clay, plaster, and wheel building. Safety and craftsmanship are emphasized.

Ceramics/Sculpture 3 (1 Semester/ 2 Semesters Max.) Grades 10,11,12

Prerequisite: Completion of Sculpture 1, 2

This course is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of making their own sculptures. Students must be self motivated and able to function with minimal instruction. Students choose any genre and media they want to work with.

Ceramics/Sculpture 4 AP (1 year) Grades 11,12

Prerequisite: Completion of Sculpture 1,2

This is an Advanced Placement sculpture course. The grade for the course is determined by daily work habits and weekly sculpture projects. This course required the students to submit a photographs portfolio of their sculptures to the College Board to be scored. Scoring is on a scale of 1-5. A score or 3,4,or 5 will earn college credit.

Music Appreciation 1 (1 semester) Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This college prep elective explores the components of music and music history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Students study the works of composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and many others. No formal music training is required.

Music Appreciation 2 (1 semester) Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Music Appreciation 1.

This college prep course will continue Music Appreciation 1 with composers of the 20th century.

Theater Arts 1 (1 semester) Grades 10, 11, 12 

This introductory course provides students with a wide variety of performing opportunities including oral interpretation of prose and poetry, scene study, short play reading and group improvisational exercises that develop voice, movement and imagination skills in order to increase student confidence. Students write and perform their own 3‑minute play in order to study the elements and structure of powerful drama.

Theater Arts 2 (1 semester) Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Theater Arts 1.

Students in Theater Arts 2 begin an intensive review of stage movement, voice and diction, characterization and ensemble improvisation. Students then study the history of world theater by reading and performing scenes in the acting style of ancient Greece, Commedia dell Arte, Moliere and Restoration Theater, Shakespeare, Brecht, Chekov and Absurdism. The class culminates in a small‑scale, student‑created production.

Advanced Theatre (1-2 Semesters) Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course is intended for students working on their personal musical and theatrical performances. Students meet during block 1. This course does not satisfy the visual and performing art requirement. 

Dance 1 Grades 10, 11, 12

This course is designed to teach basic dance steps or jazz, tap and ballet to beginners and to continue to incorporate more advanced and creative dance concepts. Students will be given the opportunity to choreograph dances both individually and in a group. Students are required to perform at a school rally.

Dance 2 Grades 10, 11, 12
Dance 2 continues with more advanced concepts of Dance 1. This course is designed to enhance the student’s appreciation in the art of jazz, tap and ballet. Students are required to perform in 2 Dance Concerts. They learn how to choreograph, incorporate costumes, and produce their performance.
